Ohio Association of Financial Aid Administrators

Minutes of the Winter Conference Business Meeting

December 8, 2005

The meeting was called to order by Mary Lynn Perri at 8:47 am.

Secretary’s report – Emily Swain reviewed and distributed the Spring 2005 Columbus conference minutes as taken by Amy Baker.  No corrections were made to the minutes and they were approved as presented.  Motion to accept by Stephanie Sutton and a second by Jerry Wade.  Emily will post the May 2005 minutes to the OASFAA website.

Treasurer’s report – Betsy Johnson and presented the Treasurer’s report.  Motion to accept by Jerry Wade and second by Betsy Johnson.

Old Business/President’s report –  NONE

New Business – Lawrence Matthews, member of the Outreach Committee, presented the history of the survey traditionally was completed by LEAF and now by OCAN.  This survey gathered institutional data from schools in Ohio including cost, deadlines, etc…  The Outreach Committee is going to send a brief survey to gather information.  The OCAN survey comes out too late for schools to use effectively.  The information on the survey from the Outreach Committee will be generic, though it will include the FAFSA priority deadline for each school.  This survey will be sent over the OASFAA listserve, and it will include the deadline.  The survey results will be posted on the OASFAA web site.   Initial deadline is the last week of January.

Discussion:  Wendell Schick asked how the Outreach Committee will monitor multiple answers from the same school.  Lawrence will monitor this.

Additionally, Don Chenelle reminded us that the Access Programs in Ohio are trying to help the schools increase the college going students within the state of Ohio.  The goal is a 30% increase.  He charged the membership with helping students who are financially struggling and students who are also from socio-economic families that are under-represented.  Don believes the solution is to work with the Access programs and use our Federal Work Study students to mentor these incoming students who may be struggling or are under-represented.  This will help Ohio graduate these students at a more successful rate.  Ohio is ranked 41st in the nation of B.A. degrees received, yet Ohio is the 7th largest in size.

Motion to adjourn the meeting was made by Angela Johnson and a second by Betsy Johnson.  Passed unanimously.
